My kid attended Hardy back over a decade ago when the student body was 1/3 white. Don't know what it is today. I know the school expanded somewhat and so that may have changed. She didn't have a problem. It was also a really good experience for her to know what it's like to be in the numerical minority. And she ended up not being afraid to be the only white person in a room - which is not something I learned growing up in small town America.

If you send your kids and they end up being harassed, I'd definitely look into moving them but I wouldn't assume up front that they will be harassed.

My son gets called names like cracker or referenced as white boy but it doesn’t bother him. He has friends of all races there. He said there is nothing to worry about. He doesn’t let things bother him though. His friends parents are wanting to take their son out of school though because of things like that. My daughter has no terrible issues at hardy either and she is blonde haired and blue eyed. She has said that she has had trouble making friends though, unfortunately.

Are you sure your kid hasn't done anything to offend anybody? What did she/he thought when group on AAs did that? Could she/he have said her/his thoughts out loud?
"Jealously"? I've never even seen high-achieving Asians and low SES AA in the same circle. Ditto if it were the other way around. Those 2 SESs are not competitors. It's just kids acting like kids. The worst part, you the grown-up, don't even see that you are doing the same thing the kids did.
It was kids active badly and in need of guidance. Not sure why you bring up their race. Maybe somebody has done it to them and they are acting out. I don't expect you to think that far or even think. Leave your feelings at home and talk to your children about blaming a whole race based on your feelings.

DC's late Mayor for Life was very publicly racist concerning Asians. He didn't exactly set an example of moral leadership on this, or on much else.

Really? You're bringing Marion Barry into the conversation? He died 3 years ago and last served as mayor in 1999, well before any student currently in Hardy MS was even born. What exactly is your point in mentioning him?

White family and we're fine with it. I went to public schools that were 30% white and it wasn't a big deal.

my question would be more - are their kids like mine there. But "like mine" doesn't mean race. If your kid is preppy - are their enough preppy kids for him to find a couple good friends. If your kid loves sports, will he have a cohort. If you kid has no interest in sports but likes science fiction, are there several others.

Go look and see. Send kid on a shadow day.

If you've raised your kid right, they won't care about the race of the other kids, but they will care about kids like them (and I don't mean just common interests - I mean types).

My white kid is perfectly happy and comfortable in 6th grade. She has white friends and African-American friends. They all hang out together and are nice kids.

Ask if your kid can shadow for a day. Visit yourself. This is a personal thing.

Different people are going to be comfortable in different situations.

It seems like you're not allowed to talk about this stuff without being called a racist. So flame away, I guess.

My kid is going into 6th grade. Hardy is mostly black kids, some hispanic, and a few whites.

1. If you have an Asian kid, are you okay with the racial makeup of the school?
2. If you have a white kid are you okay with the racial make up of the school?

My kids are both asian and white. Dh is Asian. One dd looks Asian and one dd looks white. I'm more worried about my white kid at Hardy than my Asian kid. Weird to comment that way, but easier short-hand.
