Is it a MUST that you go to Bermuda? Or would you be okay if you get re-routed to another island/port?

If there's a hurricane, the ship just changes the itinerary and goes to different ports. You really don't need to worry about hurricanes and cruises unless you're dead set on going to a specific port.

If you do get travel insurance, make sure it covers change of itinerary, not just full cancellation. Most insurance I'm familiar with would not refund if the cruise was still happening but just not going to your first choice port.

My mom is Bermudian. It’s generally out of the hurricane path (although it got hit a couple years ago, so while rare it can happen).

The last 2 weeks in August and first 2 weeks in September have seen a ton of hurricanes historically. If you do it, definitely insurance.

Generally true, but there are exceptions. Here in Miami we lived through Andrew on August 24.

We purchased travel insurance for a cruise and it was practically useless. A lot of exclusions. For example, you can’t use it for a medical reason unless it’s a new diagnosis from when you purchased your trip.

You do realize you sound like an overbearing obnoxious ass, right?

I am not one to get travel insurance but in or around hurricane season it's a must.

OP here--yes, I did think about that and that is a must for this trip!

^^^PP here. Also, if you want a very personal, small-scale tour of Bermuda with an excellent guide, I recommend Heidi of Bermuda Byways. She is a sixth-generation Bermudian and knows the island and its history inside out. We loved the tour.

We did a cruise to Bermuda and the Bahamas in mid-August last year, and the weather was very good. We had a few days of rain but no hint of a hurricane.

I do think that the odds are better in June than in August, but it worked out fine for us.

Late August is typically not yet the core of hurricanes season. I would go. Especially since the water might still be chilly in June.

I am planning a family cruise in August to Bermuda (it's the best time for me in terms of work schedule) and my aunt, who is joining us, suggested that may be we change to June due to hurricane season. I can try to make the June dates work but August would be much better for my schedule and the prices are about half of those in June. But, if the cost difference means we are stuck in a hurricane, I don't want that either.

Anyone have experience cruising in the Caribbean in late August, specifically to Bermuda? Is it worth the risk or should I rearrange plans? TIA!
