Articles like this should be required reading for 20 something’s if you ask me - but it is considered non-woke to voice that.

Tammy Duckworth is pregnant now at 49 and the there's a thread on DCUM that's 10 pages long of women convinced that it was a natural conception (despite Ms. Duckworth admitting to doing IVF at age 46). I think that many (most) women don't want to believe that fertility ends---even in the abstract sense or when talking about celebrities.

+1. 48 year old here again. Even as people are commenting on the article they aren’t getting the freezing thing is no guarantee. I had frozen embryos (higher odds than eggs) that we’re unsuccessful - AND ended up in late 40s where I couldn’t healthily carry a baby to term. The mythologies of having so much control and choice are so attractive- and the egg freezing marketing along with it — but a disservice

Oops - meant to type late 30s!!

I have severe DOR. My mother and grandmother probably both did too - (they had their kids in their 20’s but both never had a period past 37.) I was lucky enough to find an RE that would zig and zag and I got DD at 36 with my few OE. I already plan to as a College Graduation gift to pay for her to freeze her own eggs in her early/mid 20’s. Just so she has an option.

PP here. Honestly, while this article may not be "required reading" for young millenials, I do think the advent of egg freezing has brought a lot of attention on women's fertility and the relatively short window we have to easily conceive. I for one am not counting on my frozen eggs to save me or even view them as an insurance policy; i know there are no guarantees. That said, I've always been keenly aware that my fertility was on the decline, especially once I hit 35. I just wish this technology had been developed sooner. I hear a lot of women say that they are going to freeze their daughter's eggs at 21 and 30. I sincerely hope in 40 years, technology will have found a way to extend women's fertility to last a full decade longer (esp since women can clearly give birth well into their 40s, albeit not without a higher incidence of some health issues). I think the trend of delaying childbearing is not going away anytime soon.

If you'd finished the article instead of rushing back here to be smug you'd see that no, that's the point, these women are complaining they are not sufficiently advised of the odds.

What's smug about this? After all my OE IVFs failed at age 36 I know enough not to put all my faith what worked for someone else. And my doctors were very realistic about my odds.

For sure she should have done a second cycle. But if you look at the other woman profiled who also froze at 39, she froze in two rounds, got 25 eggs, and wound up with twins. It’s a crapshoot. I have 20 frozen eggs from my mid-30s and am going through IVF now at 39 with still decent numbers. Hoping it works but we’ll see.

she also had only 11 eggs. I am wondering how she because the poster woman for egg freezing given that all she did was freeze eggs and hope for the best. I would assume the poster woman would be someone whose plan actually worked.

When you've been through a lot of treatments like many of us you understand things like cycles, viability of eggs, PGS but if you are a healthy woman you've probably never had the time to look in to this. Just yesterday I saw something else about an egg freezing party and it had lots of women gushing about how easy it is.

So I'm sure this is going to get some discussion. Career woman who freezes eggs but gets no viable pregnancy. Two things stood out to me--she was already pretty old when she froze, old enough that I would have done PGS or at least a second cycle, but you can't be blamed I guess. I didn't realize just how many non-viable eggs were in a cycle until I went down this road.

Isn't PGS for embryos not eggs? I thought the whole article could have benefited from more input from a doctor.

I’m sorry for the women who didn’t end up with the children they wanted. But, I’m surprised that they weren’t more aware that the age of egg decline varies a lot between people. That seems like something that should be clearly discussed before freezing. I didn’t freeze my eggs but I ended up having severe Premature Ovarian Failure. My eggs are all non-viable by the time we started to try at 31. Our RE told us that it’s a bell curve and somebody has to be at the early end. I ended up having two great kids with donor eggs in my thirties. Despite the popular myth that donor eggs are only used for older moms, the statistics tell another story. Most rounds of donor eggs are used by women in their 20s and 30s because those groups have more women overall getting preganant (so it’s a smaller percentage but a higher number).
