17:01 - ATS parent here. I only have experience with ATS, so I can't speak to what neighborhood schools might be doing. It's the same as a neighborhood school, but with possibly more emphasis on reading. The school is more diverse than most of the schools located in North Arlington, but the test scores are very high, without over-emphasis on test prep. The PTA is very active and the parent community is engaged. Every 4th grader does choir; every 5th grader plays an instrument. (that might be APS wide.) They push kindergarten readiness hard by encouraging incoming kindergartners to attend county summer school.

If your focus is STEM, go for the STEM program. If you desire immersion, go for immersion. I can't say ATS is better than either of those - it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. But we've been very happy there.

Agree with 10:19 - I think it's good for anyone who knows where they are registering to do so as soon as possible, for planning purposes.

Also, if you have any interest in Arlington Traditional, I can strongly recommend entering the lottery for it, on the off-chance you get in. It's a terrific program.

What exactly is the instructional program at ATS? How does it differ from a neighborhood school? Why would someone choose the ATS "program" over say the STEM program at Hoffman Boston or the Spanish Immersion Program at Key?

Most of Lyon Village is zoned Taylor. Plug your address into the boundary locator here: http://gis.arlingtonva.us/mapapps/schools/

If it says Key, then you're ASFS or you can apply to the Key lottery. If it says Taylor, then you're Taylor, at least for K. New boundaries won't be effective until Fall 2019.

Please go and register your kid at the school you are currently zoned for. The more registrations they get, the more they can better plan for the volume of incoming kindergarteners. Boundaries won't be changing this fall, in any event, but knowing how many kids to expect will let them plan for teachers, classrooms, and yes boundary discussions if they see trends early.

Look at the boundary locator map for your house. They haven’t changed the zones yet. If you are zoned for Key, you may register at ASFS. You probably need to attend the information night at ASFS.
