OP here - doing more trip planning and wondering about Montreux. Can Montreux and Rochers-de-Naye be done in a day trip from Geneva, or should I plan to stay the night in Montreux?

I loved taking the free ferry (if you get the ferry pass from your hotel) across the lake a bunch of times. The free botanical gardens near the WTO are also quite nice.

Gruyere - lovely, tiny village and CHEESE!
Chamonix, France up in the mountains
Yvoire - lovely medieval village on the lake
Annecy France - another lovely village on a lake

Another vote for these places. Yvoire is out of a story book and Annecy was so beautiful. We loved Gruyere and combined it with a visit to the Cailler chocolate factory.

Montreaux and Lucerne are also beautiful.

+1

Another nice, close in spot is the Roman ruin area of Nyon. Just up the lake, a few stops on the train.

Take stock of what a country can be with merit based immigration.

Seconding the suggestion to do the UN tour - it’s cheap (8 francs, I think) and definitely worth it. If it’s not too cold, taking a long walk along the lake is always nice; there’s a pretty path that cuts through a park.

If you have a rental car, the Sunday morning market in Divonne (just across the French border) is great. There’s also the Callier chocolate factory, which does tours, but I think you need to drive there. If you don’t have a car, taking the train to Annecy is a fun day trip.

I'm PP. Are you going to Geneva to attend something at the U.N.? If not you may want to take the tour there too (I presume there is one).

If you like physics, go to CERN! Take the bus from central Geneva. They have a free tour. You have to reserve your space online ahead of time.

What places are worth putting on your itinerary in or near Geneva in spring/early summer for long weekend?
