They do in 4th and 5th. The regular track is Math 4 in 4th and Math 5 in 5th. Accelerated track is Math 4/5 in 4th and 5/6 in 5th. That sets them up to jump to IM, or pre-algebra, when they enter middle school in 6th.

IM in 7th is now standard; see link in above post.

I took her post as recommending everyone in IM7 in 6th grade, even if they didn't take compact math. Our school is starting to do the same. Compact math used to be for a small group of kids. Now 70% are in it and 85% are being recommended for IM in 6th. Ridiculous.

They are heading that way. MCPS dumbs down curriculum so everyone can joins hands together. God forbid if the lower math levels look too dark skin. We can't have that.

I miss track math classes. Kids as young as grade 1 were tracked. They could be in Math 2, Math 1 accelerated, Math 1, or Math 1 with review. Four different options for one grade. Now we are streamlining kids. It is just terrible.

Do they still offer accelerated math in elementary?

The chart in this MCPS math brochure says that the standard middle school curriculum is Math 6, IM in 7th, and Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

We talked to someone at a curriculum night that they were moving towards offered IM for all 6th graders and I quote “Because it was becoming apparent the kids not in IM were feeling segregated and noticed most minorities were not in IM.”

So basically they are looking towards a streamline middle school Math now to not hurt anyone’s feelings. So they will dumb down IM and offer it to everyone in the next 1-2 years. Just another reason the increased poor and immigrant population is crushing any chances for kids to advance at any level. Gotta pray for a magnet.

Are you sure that is what MCPS is proposing or is this specific to one school? So they plan to let most kids skip Math 6? Only the kids in compacted math would have finished math 6 if they go ahead with that plan. That doesn't make any sense or else every child is enrolled in compacted math 5/6 in 5th grade.

The plan is to have everyone in compacted math. EVERYONE. No lie. I wish I knew the lady's name. I was floored at the stupidity of how it sounded And no, it was for everyone, not just our cluster.

For about 10 years the county has been working to move as many students as possible to complete Algebra 1 by 8th grade. So the desired pathway for that is Math 6, to IM in 7th, to Algebra 1 in 8th. Some schools still offer Math 7 and Math 8 but not all. You have to check with your school. It is not true that they want *all* 6th graders in IM - that is an even more advanced track.

Yes, it was a choice for online registration at my DC's school.

I think my child might benefit from a slower curriculum.
