Try to Keto diet. It is the only one that worked for me. I think carbs really cause me to gain weight. Good luck.

I lost 70 lbs in the last year. I was VERY overweight obviously. This is how:

1) I started small with exercise (i could only do 15 of walking on the treadmill but I increased it gradually)
2) Don't starve. Eat a TON of veggies and fruits (but no dressings and dips)
3) eat carbs but good carbs
4) use my fitness pal to log everything you eat and stick to a deficit regime (meaning probably between 1200-1500 cal if you want to lose)
5) WATER, WATER, WATER....you honestly can't drink too much.
6) Don't do any fad diets. Do something that is healthy and that you can sustain for the rest of your life.

Agree with all of this, as someone who lost 60ish or so pounds, and kept it off. The key to losing "major weight" (and keeping it off) is sustainability. Move a bit more. Eat your fruits and vegetables (ie, good carbs, and plenty of them). No fads, no gimmicks. Do you know why diets have such a brand? It's because they're not trying to get you to keep weight off - they go out of business if people don't have any more weight to lose. Fads = yoyo = money in their pockets.

Eat your fruits and veggies. Have other things in moderation (not daily). Drink water. Move more. That diet has no name, because it's something that's doable for the long term.

This is exactly right. People will come on here saying NEVER DRINK ALCOHOL OR EAT BREAD OR EAT A POTATO. I'll tell you the secret - eat less. Be mindful about what you're eating. The old fill half your plate with veggies - do that. Make fitness and eating well a part of your lifestyle.

Can you ride an exercise bike or do a rowing machine? If you can splurge for a trainer once or twice a week to help you with some arm/leg/ab exercises that don't involve a lot of jumping around, that would be a good addition to cardio.

But yes to diet being the most important thing. Make changes gradually. Cut back on caloric drinks because they don't fill you up like food does. Reduce the meat or carbs in your meal by a bit and replace them with vegetables. Cut your dessert portions in half or only have dessert every other night. If you snack on your kids' leftovers, either throw them out or reduce your other food intake to accommodate. Eat out less. If there's a food you can't be trusted with (mine is crackers) just don't buy them.

The good news about having a lot of weight to lose is that at least at first, even modest changes to your diet should result in some steady weight loss. Weight watchers is a good idea.

Get your nutrition in order.

The first step is an honest accounting of what you are eating. Even if you don't want to pursue 'calorie counting' (though many swear by it) you should at least try to get one or two weeks worth of food logged so you have an idea what you are **really** eating. Quantity, micronutrients, etc.

While this sounds hard, there are apps for this that make it rather easy. Loseit and MyFitnessPal are two very popular ones. Get an idea of what you are actually eating each week (it might actually surprise you). Once you get started it's quite easy--some apps even have barcode scanners so you can quickly input into the log.

Once you have a better idea, you can continue the calorie count if you want or look at improving certain aspects of your nutrition. I don't recommend dramatic shifts away from foods that you like, but instead focus more on moderation of those items and occasional substitution with healthier alternatives. You need to make this something that is sustainable and eventually almost habitual so radical instant changes are probably not the best as they won't last.

Eventually you'll want to move a bit more. Please don't buy the most expensive trainers you can find and go out running immediately. Take a look at simpler exercises to start, like walking more. Do things like park further away from the shop, walk up the stairs, skip the short drive and make it a short walk. Start to move and eventually, as the nutrition cuts in, start to look at some other options like Couch to 5k or cycling or something else you can work into your life.

Good luck.

FWIW I lost 60lbs in 9 months starting with calorie counting (which I still do) but also with nutritional substitution of things like a salad instead of crisps, chicken instead of burgers, oranges instead of candy, etc.

I have good luck with a Diet called the No S Diet. Someone basically made it up but it has a following. 3 meals a day..anything you want but no SECONDS (first S). No SWEETS (second S). No SNACKING (3rd S) between meals. Except SOMETIMES. You can cheat a couple of times a week...they suggest Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days (your birthday). I think it works for me because snacking is a huge thing for me. I just can't start. I just allow about 3 exceptions a week whenever I want.

Same here. Weight Watchers seems to be helpful in establishing healthy and sustainable eating habits.

If you are really serious about losing the weight and can afford it, I would hire a personal trainer to come to your house.

OP here. I am 5'1 and weigh 192 pounds. Which is 20 pounds heavier than I was when 9 months pregnant with my son. So yes, I need to lose weight. I was 130 before babies.

Major weight is 50+ lbs.

You need to tighten up your calorie intake. Start today. Be mindful of what you are putting in your mouth. Especially liquid calories, drink mostly water. Do that for a month and report back.

12 pounds isn't really "major weight" and can be addressed through small lifestyle changes. However... Were you overweight to start with? Do you need to lose more than the 12?

Focus on diet first - this will jump start weight loss. Then look into HIIT, circuit training, cycling, yoga.

Had a very frank discussion with my OB today. Gained 12 pounds in the last year -- I blame the stress of life (lots of changes, etc.). She's never said anything to me about my weight, except for today. A real wake up call. Would like suggestions for exercises for a busy mom who also has major foot troubles can squeeze into an already jam packed day - running, high intensity cardio will trigger another injury in my foot. Swimming? Anything else?
