What's the buy-in? Is it a deposit that's eventually refunded or is it like a up-front payment that you never get to see?

We are looking into options right now in Northern Virginia. We've primarily focused on smaller, residential care facilities and have found the costs to be around $4500-$5500. It could be more depending on needs. No buy in. These are residential-type settings providing care for around 6-10 residents.

We are not expecting facilities to have zero violations. To us, however, there is a big difference between "administrative "violations (e.g., not keeping certain records up to date or incorrect information on posted daily/weekly lunch menu) vs violations that involve aspects of care we deem really important (overnight staff ready and prepared, observations that staff not engaging with residents and providing opportunities for activities, residents being propped up in wheelchairs).

Thank you for the insight. I have heard about Herndon Home Care through another professional that they make gourmet meals and ask the resident what they like to eat for each and every single meal. And it feels like living at your own home. I wonder if I can get references to check for Herndon Home care before I can tour the place for my mom.

I am a health care professional who works with dementia specially for the last 10 yrs. it is hard or almost impossible to get a personal caregiver under 12k a month. I feel bad for all the elderly who worked hard and have to pay that much a month to get a decent quality of life. I suggest finding group homes with small patient population with personalized care is a better option. You almost have your own private caregiver as the caregiver to patient ratio is 1:3 which is awesome than a regular assisted living with 1:15. One excellent group Home I found which is run by a Geriatric RN is Herndon Home Care.

You can find places with no buy in. Those places are a huge scam. Assisted living in this area is about $8-12K. You are better off hiring caregivers and keeping her in her home if possible. Most aren't great. The nursing home my MIL is in is well rated and terrible.

Buy in's vary depending on what they get you. Like one PP mentioned, it may transition you to more skilled care, etc later on without additional funds, etc. Sometimes there are returns of the buy in's to the heirs. It's just all over the board.

I know a couple of people in places closer to Baltimore (maybe cheaper than DC area) and they're around $8-10k/month with steady increases. It's insane.

In Houston, my mom is in a place for about $7k a month. It's specifically for Alzheimer's/dementia care. My dad manages the payments, so I don't know if there was a buy in. I don't think so.

The range is absolutely insane. My husband's grandmother just went into assisted living the author's continual care meaning you can transition from Assisted Living to nursing. Basically One Stop Warehouse shop to die.

The buy-in was somewhere in the $300,000 range. Monthly cost $4,500. Richmond area.

It's so secretive with costs. Looking at getting my mom in a place, but wondering if everything is $1million buy in plus $8k a month.
