Not surprising given the cost for a condo, townhouse, or single family home in this area. Move back home for a few years and save your money for a down payment, unexpected expenses, work wardrobe, car to get to work, etc. If given the opportunity, I would do it.

It has been seriously impressive in the last 10+ years to see how many kids of CEOs have become drug addicts, OD’d, or have really no job/life. Certainly not everyone but way more than you would expect!

Umm not sure if you’ve heard but the job market isn’t exactly stellar. This situation is common to thebentire millennial generation.

Lots of possible reasons:

Save money

Economy

Burn out

Mental health issues

Haha on our expensive street 1/2 the families just moved in with Grandma and Grandpa for the good schools or inherited the house. Trickle down economics in action.

We know lots of trust fund families in McLean and North Arlington. I guess the poors rely on a check from the government and others rely on a check from Mom and Dad. At least 1/2 the people in our neighborhood could not afford the house they live in without a lifetime of help from Mom and Dad.

I can see it happening. I know a guy who was in the top-10 at our good public high school. He went to U Penn for undergrad and another good school for a grad program. And then.... he totally boomeranged back and hasn't done much since. Another guy I know did his undergrad at Miami of Ohio (good school, not cheap) and then.... hasn't done much since. He's 46 and still living off his parents. Those are just two cases - I know of others.

My daughter went to mclean HS and graduated from VA Tech with an Engineering degree. She is working for a government contractor firm at 90k/year IT job, much higher than GS-11. Yes, she is still living in my mclean home basement because she wants to save money in the next three years for a house down payment. She gets free rent, food and transportation from mom and dad.

Nope. And they wouldn't be living in the basement if they came home, either.

Lol. Yeah right. The kids at Wakefield don't have the luxury of failing to launch. After college they have to work, they have student loans to pay back.

I am constantly surprised by all of the neighborhood kids who were once identified as gifted, took honors/AP courses and went to excellent universities. Yet moved back home and are living in the basement.

Has this happened to your kids? Any regrets or advice if you thought you did everything right? Any ideas on how we can prevent this from happening to our children? Thanks.
