No way are telephone calls more efficient than texts. The sender can send when it's convenient to them and the recipient can respond when it's convenient. With a phone call, you both have to be available at the same, exact time (often meaning one person has to set aside what they were doing for the convenience of the other.) Also, texts tend to be right to the point and don't require a bunch of fluff about "how's it going," "sure is some weather we're having lately," and "well, I guess I've got to go now." Finally, people tend to focus their thoughts more when writing than when speaking so the communication is frequently not as vague.
