We had fig that was almost 25 years old, and twice now in the last five years it's been winterkilled all the way down to the ground. Probably again this year, too because of last weeks weather.
Believe whatever you want about global warming, but the fig trees don't lie - it's colder here lately than it's been in a lifetime.
Figs do great here, and even if they die back to the ground they don't actually die, so it doesn't matter because they regrow and set their main crop of fruit on the new wood.
