I understand the situation-habit problem, but this focus on willpower and deprivation is going to backfire on you--the problem becomes the monster you cannot slay and won't go away.

It is Psych 101.If you have no willpower to not let a banana turn into a cookie, then how do you expect to just go cold turkey? Set up for failure.

Turn off the TV for awhile ( The best solution to the problem as you see it is to just stop watching tv)

OR find another habit, like knitting or whatever, to occupy you while you watch. Find another association.

Snacking is fine if you learn how to snack well.

You need to break the habit of snacking on junk, but not of fleshing out a diet with some fruit and veggies during some much-deserved TV time catching up on your shows!

OP here, and I appreciate this, but my TV snack addiction is what helped me gain 40lb. I have to stop associating TV with the need to eat something.

I didn’t snack last night and I was just fine. I’m proud I could do it.

Maybe months from now I can introduce a banana or whatever, but as it is now, I have no will power and a banana turns into a cookie, and a yogurt, and...

^^I suggested tea or brushing your teeth above, but I also agree with above PP re: have snacks as it will be easier to stick to your diet in the long-term.

What works for me is "saving" some calories for the evenings because that's when I know I want a little something more - a small piece of chocolate, half a glass of wine, etc. Because it's not completely forbidden, it's not on my mind all the time, and half the time I skip the snack.
