I know someone who slipped on ice, hit a metal hand rail, fell down two steps and ended up with a broken leg, cuts, bruises, and looking like she was in a major accident!
I know someone else who tripped while taking her pants off and ended up with a broken arm and a deep gash in her knee.
Neither had been drinking - both just fell in bad ways and hit things on the way down.
I caught an episode of 20/20 about disabled physicians recently. The told the story of a young man who stood up from studying at a desk, lost his balance, fell backward over the chair, and hit the back of his neck on a glass coffee table. He was instantly paralyzed from the waist down.
