For a friend, yes, I would tell, and yes, it would be awkward for a while. But I only count as friends people who are really close to me, so the friendship would survive.

Now, for an acquaintance? I would be tempted to stay out of it, but would feel really bad.

Yes! Personally have a feeleing a friend or two know more than I do but wish they would tell me or someone would. Embarrassed to ask in case they don’t and I’ve outed myself.
