My 9 yo was diagnosed with apraxia/dyspraxia at age 3. Based on behavior and tantrums, I was positive that he wold eventually be diagnosed with ADHD. In the interim, we tried the Feingold diet and it made a huge difference. By age 5, he was an entirely different kid. His apraxia/dyspraxia was considered resolved at 7. He has no ADHD.

We got it early on (called DCD) from a physical medicine doctor at Children’s. A developmental pediatrician could also probably diagnose it. Did PT and OT to improve fine and gross motor skills.

My DC also have apraxia or speech — which was often called verbal dyspraxia 14 years when DC was diagnosed.

Interesting. How did you end up being referred to a physical medicine dr as opposed to a dev ped? Was it due to the motor delays?

For us, dyspraxia was comorbid with ADHD and language disorder. YMMV.

I have one kid with coordination disorder and another with apraxia of speech. They were both diagnosed with ADHD/inattentive and anxiety later.

6/7 is the minimum age for a neuropsych but from what you describe, I would try medicating for ADHD now and see if it makes a difference. Stimulants are short acting and why wait a year and make everyone suffer. What does the dev ped say?

Also you can request an ADOS/ADI-R which is the gold standard for evaluating for ASD. It can be done at any age, although there is a long wait at least get on the waitlist now at Children’s and/or KKI. Get on the waitlist for both, you can cancel the other if you get in earlier with one.

He is currently seen by speech therapists, occupational therapists and a dev ped. The home situation has become very hard and I dont have any resource for home life yet other than ot sensory diet activities.

We never got a formal ASD diagnosis, but my child probably has all of these. I think they are common together.

Did it end up being ADHD or anything else or did it end up being comorbid with adhd or anything else? My ds age 5 was diagnised at age 4 with dyspraxia. Over the last year how behavior has been horrific. But he has major hyperactivity and impulsivity. Touches everyrhing. Never stops running, screaming growling, etc. I just feel like this has got to be something else in addition to dyspraxia. Im doing a neuropsych when he turns 6. Wondering what other parents of kids with dyspraxia have experienced. Thanks for your time in advance.
