I drive a Mazda CX-9 and love it, but I had friends visiting today with the Mazda cx-3 and I was thinking about what a great car that seemed like--zippy and sleek. That's what I'd consider in your category.

What about an electric? Everyone I know who drives one likes it because no gas station trips and no maintenance. Only thing is you need a reliable place to plug in and it helps if you have a garage.

I drove a corolla rental recently and I would definitely consider as my next car. But hopefully my minivan will last a long, long, long time.

Subaru crosstreck
Subaru impresa hatchback
Honda crv
Toyota rav4
Or maybe the Honda Element

It's too bad they don't make the Matrix anymore. It was a great car.

Honda Element? They stopped making those around 7 years ago

You might still be able to get a deal on a brand new 2017 Corolla.

Honda HRV, it’s a hatchback crossover. I’ve had mine for two years and I’m happy with it.

I would first wait & see how much $$ your insurance intends to fork over.

Car insurance companies should offer you the blue book value and you may get a deductible refund from the party at fault.

I went with a Subaru Crosstrek, mostly for the added safety factor.

The Matrix did •ok• in the crash, but I still got hurt, and the car probably should've been designed to better protect me. I decided after that crash that safety was now my most important factor, hence the decision to get the Subaru

It's a decent car. Not enough power, though. But it handles very well, better than the Matrix did, and the all wheel drive system is phenomenal on snow. But it doesn't have the flat cargo floor like the Matrix had, and I miss that part.

+1

I used to drive a Mazda 3 and after an accident I bought a Subaru Outback, primarily for safety features.

So sorry about the accident; the Matrix is a hatchback so similar cars would be the Mazda 3 or Subaru Impreza. You could likely find gently used ones for under $20k

You can get a new corolla for under $20k. With cheap financing it will probably be less than a used one.

Sorry about your car. Glad you are ok!

My car bit the dust today—when the car behind you doesn’t stop for a light on Columbia Pike, well, sayonara to my much beloved 2008 Toyota Matrix.

Recommendations for replacements? I would like to stay at $20,000 or less, so definitely considering used options. Toyota doesn’t make the matrix anymore, but I would love something similar. Also considering a Corolla. Bonus if I can afford a moonroof option, which I had in the matrix, but I realize that is likely a stretch.
