OP here. We have read that Athens is a great town although there have been some postings online that if you are underage you need to be careful not to get arrested if you are caught drinking. My expectation is that its college and that college kids will drink so I'd hate to see my DD wind up with an arrest record for drinking. This is not a judgement about the drinking age just my perspective as a parent.

+1. It's a football school. Their campus recruiting is lacking and students rarely have summer internships in large cities. It's an SEC school. It's gotten harder to get into in recent years but the academics haven't improved.

Go for it! My DC is in Georgia Tech and loves the football, traditions of a southern school and Atlanta. We don't get instate tuition though - wished we did

My cousin got tossed out of the Michigan dorms for smoking weed and ended up at Georgia. He absolutely loved it, got his act together, went to Stanford for medicine and now has his own successful private practice.
I feel like he got the best of both worlds, the great big state school experience with booze and football, and the academic rigor to get into a very competitive medical program.
If you’re getting lots of merit aid, it feels like a win.

OP here. Tulane is one of the other schools DD applied to EA and was accepted with generous merit aid. We laugh because she is very studious and hard working and yet she will tell you that Tulane and UGA are #1 and #2 on Niche for top party schools. New Orleans gives me pause but so does the idea of her going to a school like Columbia with a high stress level. She's got great stats (4.0 Unweighted GPA, 1550) but I want her to have some fun - just not too much.
That's why we wondered if the honors program at UGA might fit a bit of a hybrid model - the feel of a smaller school within a larger institution.
I know two very bright, relatively studious, non-partying students from the DMV who love Tulane and New Orleans. The kids I know from the DMV who go to Georgia are more Southern prep, frat/sorority types. So based on my limited knowledge, for your DD, Tulane>Georgia. JMO

I can understand your thinking. It will probably work out.
For some reason, UGA has dropped off of Princeton Review's list of top party schools. Maybe the school made some drastic changes to address that issue.

My DD was recently accepted into UGA and more specifically into their honors program. As part of her admission, UGA offered my DD instate tuition so financially it's pretty appealing. We do not live in VA as many on these boards do so some of the fine VA schools are not available to us at instate rates. While at first I was somewhat dismissive of UGA, in looking into the school and the surrounding area, it seems to have a lot going for it.
I would appreciate any input from folks that are familiar with the school.
