Is she a freshman? What was her intended course of study?

I would heave a heart to heart with her and start researching the heck out of options. There are lots of folks out there who have gone really far in the beauty industry. I would try to narrow down her interests, maybe research the backgrounds of some beauty professionals that she admires, and try to come up with a solid plan for her. Maybe a good cosmetology school now, but what she really hopes for career-wise might involve business school at some point; maybe that could motivate her to further her college education, now or later.

OP you need to listen to what your DD is telling you, and not what DCUM as a whole is leading you to believe - that a lack of a college degree leads to a life of failure and poverty.

I honestly could not care less if my kids told me they wanted to go to trade school, so long as it is a passion of theirs.

She doesn't vwant a business degree. She has always struggled with math so accounting would be a significant hurdle. I just fear dropping out will really narrow her world.

I'd like to see her have some business classes (at some point) so that she is in a position to open her own salon if she desires. I wouldn't be a snob about it. It's a job that is unlikely to be replaced by robots, can pay quite well, is portable to any region of the country, and can provide tons of flexibility if she chooses to have a family. Plus, you don't have to pay $$$$ for a college degree she isn't going to use. Sounds like you've raised a smart girl!

OP:. She has a flair for style but she would not have a degree to fall back on. I also feel she will regret not having a four year college experience like her friends.

I might make her finish her 4-year degree but then do cosmo school afterward. It's a "trade," but you can make a lot of money and it can't be outsourced, so if she's into it, it might really be her niche. The 4-yr degree would be to fall back on or just to have, because realistically she'll never go back if she quits now.

The woman who cuts my hair graduated from RISD before changing careers to go into cosmetology.

She has always gotten so-so grades and not been particularly motivated. We are a very education-oriented family. I know this will make me sound like a snob, but I fear her slipping down in terms of the lifestyle she will eventually have if she goes this route.
