In some cases. But some people are unhappy in their current school, but don't have options to leave until 5th. More slots open then for a host of reasons.

We would have loved to get into Shepherd or West and would have planned to stay in either, so long as our expectations weren't totally dashed.

We ended up in a charter that I'm happy with for now at least.

OP - sounds like you want student retention data.

Go to the DCPS profile page for whatever schools you are considering.

Click on the "Scorecard" tab -- and then scroll down and open the section on Safe and Effective Schools.

That is where you can find the percentages of students that re-enroll (aka student retention).

How old is your child? PK3? It is very hard to get into any of the gentrifying EOTP DCPS schools for PK3, especially those that might meet your criteria.

This is the data you want to review:

Look for schools that accepted students at PK3 with "no preference" and/or the length of the in-boundary waitlist.

OP here. I understand the OB issue, and am including our in-bound option as well. Also, I understand that all children are different and will respond better to different schools. Perhaps "popular" wasn't the right word. Basically, I am interested in your thoughts and opinions. Which I will consider, in conjunction with my own thoughts and opinions, those of DH, and those of other people I know and respect. Just trying to see if I am not thinking of something or if there is a school I have not considered.

The DCPS schools that are popular beyond preschool are likely not going to have room for OOB applicants.

Which EOTP DCPS schools are popular beyond preschool? I would like for my DS to attend a school we could realistically be at for the next 4-6 years (so through grades 1-3). Not sure we will still be in the DC area beyond that. I really dislike the idea of school hopping each year, so I am hoping to lottery into a school we can commit to for those years. I already have some charters in mind to include on our lottery list, so I am really looking for insider information/reviews/opinions for the EOTP DCPS schools.
