I believe it's in Harlem, I've never ventured north past Central Park and am guessing that the safety reputation that beleaguered areas such as Harlem and the Bronx are as outdated as other areas in NYC which have seen a large turnaround since the 70s and 80s. True?
This is correct. I lived in Harlem for 10 years and I never came into direct contact with crime other than having my car broken into. As in any big city you will want to keep your guard up and protect your belongings. Be very smart and aware at all times.
The Alexander Hamilton House is located in Saint Nicholas Park. You will want to catch the C train to 135th Street Station and go out of the north end exit. Turn and walk up the hill. If it is a Sunday and they are doing track work then you will need to catch the A train to 145th Street and walk back toward City College (just ask the locals). You can also catch the IRT and get off at City College station then walk east. While you are in the area I suggest you go farther north and check out the Morris-Jumel Mansion. If you get to the Bronx you should check out the Bartow-Pell Mansion. Have fun! I wish I could be your tour guide!
Don't forget to hit 125th Street for the vibrant street culture and shopping. Stop into Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster on a Monday night for live music. Enjoy!
