Exactly. Totally defeats the purpose of having a play date so that your child has someone to play with and you have some time to yourself! Some parents are completely clueless.

That is so rude. I would have had to call the dad to pick the child up- I'm not his free babysitter. And it's not his sister's job to "watch him"- she's there for a play date with her friend! He may be clueless, but that is no excuse.

This same situation has happened to me before too! Once it was a parent strongly hinting how much fun it would be for her younger child if she could stay too - and of course, being a wimp, I said, "Sure, she can absolutely stay!" That child turned out to be the biggest pain in the neck. She kept pretending to get hurt so that she could "cry" and get all the attention. I was so mad at myself for saying yes to the mother.

The other time, a dad came to pick up his son from a playdate with my son. The dad wound up *staying* for over an hour, while I was trying to cook dinner for my family! He just stuck around in the kitchen, talking about nothing, while the boys continued to play. I said several times, "Ok, I think Larlo's ready to go now," and he would not take the hint. I think he must have had some sort of social skills issues since he couldn't pick up on obvious cues. Very strange.

The father was totally out of line. Who are these parents who just couldn't care less about their kids? Next time you will feel strong enough to say no.

Daughter's friend from soccer came over. Her father dropped her off and had their 7 year old son with him. He asked if the son could stay, too while he took care of a few things. I never met the dad. Met the mom a handful of times thru soccer events. I felt put on the spot and told him I wasn't planning on supervising the girls, they are 12 and he said it's ok. The sister would keep an eye on him. I ended up agreeing and regretted because this kid was a handful. Not sure where the mom was.
