No, where I'm from in small-town midwest it's casual. This was in a DC suburb.

This is so closed minded and exactly the type of statement that makes people hate flyover country. Where you are FROM is not how things ARE in the entire WORLD. Can't you see that? Isn't it reasonable to you that people would dress up for special occasions, even if your little podunk family doesn't do it?

My family always dressed up for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. But for the love of god, why didn’t she tell you? It’s not like every family has the same traditions. And although my family always dressed up I would never, ever tell a boyfriend he lost points because of how he dressed. If my parents were that superficial I’d keep the info to myself.

In our family the men wear non-jeans and sweaters. Women are slightly more dressy, but there are a flurry of texts confirming dress levels.

My girlfriend invited me to her home for Thanksgiving. All the other men wore jackets and ties. I was business casual. In my family, all the relatives dressed informally -- like jeans and flannel shirts. Anyway, she's still in a bit of a huff. I didn't know. I would have dressed up if I had.
