American Plant does gift certificates too in addition to Behnkes - I'm sure most nurseries do. I tell all my relatives to just buy my husband and I a boxwood when they get stumped. The only one who believes us and does it is my mother - a good boxwood is gold for a gardener.

Finally, bulbs are expensive and much loved - Allium, especially the big ones can be $15 a bulb. You could preorder tulip or alium now but not really seasonal.

The product is excellent but shuts the water off abruptly, causing water hammer (which makes a loud noise and can damage your pipes.)

Not OP, but also looking for gifts for a gardener. DH has been very into gardening lately (hobby picked up from his father, a life-long gardener). Can any experienced gardeners recommend specific tools/gifts and post links? I know absolutely NOTHING about gardening, so need very explicit suggestions!

What I've done for other gardeners is bought some interesting plants for them, for their garden. I'm in California, so I bought my SIL 6 different types of California natives to try in her garden.

If you buy a pruner, make it a Felco (pricey but they are the best)

I asked my DH for 20 8-foot bamboo poles to build trellises with. I also love new hand pruners, gloves, and baskets and trugs for hauling stuff around. White Flower Farm has some lovely indoor plants to tide us gardeners over - jasmine is lovely. And yes, I’d gardener is local, gift certificate to Behnke’s.
