The oldest (16) plays what he wants. He has no interest in violent games like Grand Theft Auto and only occassional interest in Call of Duty. The youngest (10) has the strictest restrictions and the middle (12) has slightly less restrictions.
Here is what I would allow for an average ten year old, even if dad is playing it with him:
1) Kid games like Minecraft, Lego games, etc (obviously)
2) All sports games (Madden 18 is hugely popular)
3) Star Wars Battlefront games, all versions (Yes, it is rated T but that really is irrelevant in my opinion. It is just like playing in the movies, so if he has seen the movies the game is no big deal. If you want a cool "compromise" game, this is it.)
4) Plants vs Zombies, Knack 2, etc.
5) Overwatch is VERY popular right now with older elementary kids. It is another good "compromise" game that is more grown up but still okay for kids the age of your son. Most of his peers are probably playing it or will start this year.
Absolutely no on my list for a ten year old is:
Call of Duty
Grand Theft Auto
The Lord of the Rings games (mybe around 12)
Any games rated M for violence or sexual situations
Forgot a big one, Destany. This one is big with kids a little older than your son. My 12 year old plays it with his friends online. My ten year old is not allowed to play it yet. If you want to be stricter with games, I woukd not allow your kid to playnit yet. If you want a cool compromise game to make your husband happy, Destany is probaby a much better choice than Call of Duty.
