If you want to stay at the resort the whole time, it doesn't matter which destination you choose. If you want to do excursions, Riviera Maya/Tulum/Cancun have many more options.

I think we want more relaxation than anything, but a one day excursion sounds fun.

My next question to you is what type of excursion? Something educational (the ruins in Riviera Maya), some other type?

If you are mainly looking for relaxation, I vote for the nicest resort with the best price. Caveat, my family didn't spend much time in the ocean. They spent more time in the pool so while some people may complain that the DR ocean wasn't as nice, crystal blue that didn't bother us.

I would say educational like the ruins vs. water sports, etc

Then definitely do Mexico - Tulum/Riviera Maya/Cancun.

any specific recommendations re: resorts in that area?

I looooved Tulum. Beautiful area. If I was ever going to go back, I'd look to stay somewhere in the Mayan Riveria area south of Cancun.

If you want to go to the DR, look at resorts near Bayahibe or La Romana on the other side of the island. It's on the Caribbean sea so the water is much clearer and calmer with white sand beaches. Very beautiful and relaxing.

Punta Cana was very poor outside the resorts when we visited several years ago. There was nothing to see, no place to eat... which would be fine but the contrast was very sad.

If you want excursions, particularly Mayan ruins, then Mexico is the better choice. If you just want a nice pool/beach vacation and don't care if you never leave the resort then I think DR is the better choice.

Puerto Plata and Sosua used to be very popular with foreigners going there for the prostitutes. If you want something less sketchy, I think Cabarete might be a better choice.

I love Negril. Gorgeous beach, delicious fun, blue mountain coffee, yum. So much fun. The cliffs, the waterfalls, historical sites, straw markets, snorkeling, so much to do.

We liked Club MEd Cancun over Paradisus Reserve in DR.

Much preferred Riviera Maya area or Tulum over Cancun. Preferred Mexico over DR.

Looking to spend about a week in the Caribbean somewhere next year in the summer. Looking for places with nice beach/water, good kids' club (kids will be 8 and 6), and direct flights from DC. Cancun and Punta Cana seem to have the most direct flights. Any suggestions? For those who have been to both areas, which do you prefer? I know summer is not ideal, but it's the only time we can go.
