My sense is no gift at this stage. I think a card with an original heartfelt sentiment written inside would be nice. You say there is a language issue but the family can translate if necessary. Maybe a small box of chocolates to accompany the card. Thank you for being thoughtful of others.

OP again wanted to add she got me a lovely, thoughtful, and useful gift from a trip abroad this summer so another reason why I think I should give her a gift!!

Hope this isn't a dumb question. I'm in my first serious relationship and we're at 8 months. At this point I have a pretty good relationship with my boyfriend's local family and see them about twice a month. I'd like to get something at least for his mother who is great but there's a language barrier between us so I haven't been able to get to know her as well as I like.

I love giving gifts, I'm not really worried about picking something out for her (ideas certainly welcome though) but just want to make sure it's not weird. Maybe it would be best to stick to Christmas treats or a card or something?
