I went to Emory, albeit a long time ago (graduated early 2000s). I didn't love it. The professors/academics are overall great, but Greek life overwhelms the social scene. I was in a sorority, but it was not a positive experience. There are no big team sports so no real sense of community, and at the same time, it's too big to have the personal attention of a small liberal arts school. I wish I had gone elsewhere, and yes I did have other options (even Ivies!).

That said, I had a bunch of friends there who absolutely loved it. It just depends on your kid, OP.

DC was trying to choose last year between Emory and a few top 30 SLACS in the Northeast. Emory was so much more diverse (to the pp who said it was mostly white -- it isn't, this year entering class was 37% caucasian), and has some top-notch students, plus the weather is better! The social scene though it a bit different -- it isn't a big sports school, or a school where everyone is going out on Friday night. Still, DC absolutely feels like Emory was the right choice.

Why do most people automatically assume warmer weather is "better"? I lived in Houston, which has about the same type of climate as Atlanta, and I thought the weather sucked. Couldn't wait to move back north.

PP poster who complained about frats here...No Emory isn't at all like Vanderbilt. It has a much less Southern vibe to it. I just don't see the purpose of fraternities anywhere...my own opinion. I think about %20 of kids participate in Greek life...

Not OP but also curious about Emory. Is Greek life really big at the school? We visited Vanderbilt, which way too preppy, conservative, & Greek for my dc and was wondering if Emory was similar.

DC is at Emory and also loves it. Atlanta is a fantastic city and my kid has been all over the place. The dorms are really nice and rooms are big. Quality of teaching is top notch. I agree with PP that some classes are hard to get into. I wish they would get rid of the fraternities but I don’t see that happening. Overall though, I would say big thumbs up...

Very Jewish

Beautiful campus, very convenient to the CDC for public health/premed internships and experiences. Pre-med is big on campus. Not that diverse- mostly privileged Asian and white students. Strong undergrad focus with a liberal arts emphasis. Research opportunities are plentiful. Yield is extremely low- many students see it as a backup to another top school. Offers full merit scholarships through the Emory Scholars program. There is a side liberal arts college called Oxford College where you can also apply; after two years there, you finish your studies at the university.

My DD is a freshman there and LOVEs it. It was her first choice. The kids are all accomplished in lots of different areas and are strong students. DD loves her classes, professors, roommate, dorm, climate and the opportunities that she is getting. Only negatives that I have noticed so far are that registering for classes has been stressful. Has been surprisingly difficult to get into first choice classes in the early stages of registration, but she was eventually able to get some of them during the add/drop/swap period.
