Then he needs treatment along with jail time. No amount of prison time will cure mental illness.
From the article:
Defense attorneys for Johnson told the judge that he suffers from mental illness and had been sleeping on the streets for days before the murder. He had been discharged from a psychiatric facility because he had no insurance, they said.
If true as presented, this is incredibly tragic. An innocent woman suffered unknown horror and death because he was kicked out of a facility for lack of insurance.
So again, an extended amount of jail time is pointless
It's not pointless. Why didn't you take him in after being released? Better yet, take your a&* down to the local hospital and taken one in that is being released.
I have a violent mentally ill brother and I am a POC. Yes, mental illness is horrible, but sometimes keeping them in hospitals, force feeding them meds is no better solution.

NP. If he serves all of the 30 year sentence (unlikely), he will be 60 when he is released. He will be 60, with maybe-treated-or-maybe-untreated mental illness, no hope of a job. If he has family, he may be able to live with them, although that seems unlikely.
What will he do when he is released? What is the point? Either give him a sentence with a hope of a life afterward or imprison him for life or, if we as a society deem his life of no value or his crime of such awfulness, then just kill him right now.
I think our sentencing system needs to be 100% rethought and overhauled.
