This is my question too. Also, is the internal opening big enough that my big woolly balls of dog fur won't keep blocking it? (I keep chopsticks with my vac because I have to often stick them up/pull fur out of my canister to empty as it clumps together.

How have you found Roomba to work with carpet tassels? Does it know not to grab them or does it get tangled in them/pull them?

I only have one floor, but if I ever have two floors I'm getting two. I have a 650 and it's old and totally fine. I buy after market replacement filters on ebay or amazon (but I don't replace them too often). So if you're not picky about the new things, get two older ones for the same price as one new one.

That said, why not start with one and see if you get tired of rotating it up and down? You don't have to move the dock - just pick it up, put it where you want to clean and let it run until it dies (while you're out, preferably). Then you can just pick it up and stick it back on the dock yourself.

No, I move the dock around from floor to floor.

So, for you situation I would say it is totally worth it.

We have the Neato Botvac. I'm not sure of the model but it was around $400. I liked it much better than the Roombas because it actually maps out the area to clean. It will systematically clean the area with back and forth strokes unlike Roomba that bounces off walls and furniture like a ping pong ball. The best part is that when it starts running out of battery it returns to its base, recharges and then returns to where it left off to finish cleaning. My main level is mostly hardwood floors and area rugs with about 1800 sq. ft and it doesn't miss a beat. It does a great job on the wood floors which was the main reason I purchased it.

I heard the Neato is better on carpet but we have hardwood and lowpile area rugs.

Agreed on the Neato instead of the Roomba. It's possibly my favorite possession!

My Neato is absolutely worth it. I just carry it up or down the stairs if I want to run it on another level. I use my central vac hose to suck all the dirt out of the collection canister. Couldn't be easier.

Thinking of getting a roomba because we have dogs. The kitchen and mudroom are in different levels and the bedrooms are on a different floor. Worth it even in a split?

Which model do you all have? Is it worth the hassle of emptying it and charging it?
