In baskets on open shelving in the kitchen. Potatoes get a kitchen towel thrown over them to block the light so they don't turn green.

Onions in the fridge because it reduces the crying when I cut them

I can’t remember I have them if I don’t see them. I don’t even buy potatoes because they go bad. Onions are in a bowl on the counter.

Nothing in your kitchen is “cool.” So if I have anything more than 6-7 they go in the basement in a wooden bin. Same for onions. I replenish as needed.

potatoes I keep in the bag and store in a wire basket that's off the floor inside the pantry

I would make sure the bin is breathable.

I have a bin like this inside a cabinet. I can't eat onions, so only use it to store potatoes, and the occasional butternut squash.

Same. Two bottom cabinets in random mixing bowls.

We have a bin that holds potatoes on the top and onions on the bottom, which works well. They last quite a long time and never any issue with vermin or what have you. Ours is like this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/464447535/potato-and-onion-bin-potato-binvegetable

In my husband’s car. The trunk is the best spot.

I've always heard that potatoes and onions didn't need to be refrigerated and should be stored in a cool, dark place (like a basement). Up until now I've only lived in apartments and small houses without a basement. The few times I've tried to store potatoes and onions on the counter or in the pantry they have gone bad quickly so I've always just kept them in the fridge.
We just moved into a house that has a basement with a pantry/closet area and I was thinking of trying to store them down there, but I really don't want to attract vermin.

So, where do you store your potatoes and onions? And, a side note, do you follow the "rule" that they need to be separated- not stored in the same drawer?
