Just say "plans changed, I'll be working Friday". This is not a big deal at all.

Yes, I do it frequently, most often because it turns out there is something urgent at work, and I'd rather cancel the PTO day than work and get dinged. Help keep resentment at bay. But my case seems different than yours... From a manager's perspective, I wouldn't care as long as you were transparent about it.

Just go to Shenandoah and look at the leaves, they don't miss you.

Yes, I have taken off days and then given them back. It is typically when circumstances changed (ie. my father was going to come in town and I took off Friday, but his plans changed at the last minute and he wasn't coming till Sat. Or one time we had to come home early from a vacation due to spouse being ill (not life threatening, but unpleasant being away from home.) He didn't need anything from me (he slept all day) so I put the kids back in daycare (so he had a quiet house) and went to work so I could save those vacation days for when everyone was well and we could spend time together.

But I would never take a week off and randomly show up on a Wednesday because I was bored at home.

What can't you stand about staying at home?

Spouse is at home annoying you?

No, unless you want the day back in your bank so you can use it later in the year.

Frankly, this should be a yellow flag that you have too much of your life wrapped up in work and haven't developed enough hobbies/interests/desires outside of work.

I took the week off. I am debating if I should go back on Friday. Did anyone ever go back to work when you were scheduled to take time off but you went back earlier cause you couldn't stand staying home? Does it look un personal if you go back?
