Subject: Do teens at wealthier schools really feel pressure to have the latest & greatest iPhone?
OP,
ALL kids above the age of 8 or so talk about who has the latest and greatest iPhone. It’s the designer jean of the iGeneration.

DS is in 7th grade and has an Android, but gets crap for it. He never talks about brand clothes, etc., but certainly having an iPhone is a status symbol. It annoys the crap out of me.

My high schoolers go to HS in a wealthy district. We all use iPhones til they die andn the upgrade to the most current model. Kids have never complained. But they also know they can go to college whatever they're accepted to and will graduate debt-free. It's perspective.

To me, it does not matter. I am not wealthy. My DD gets a new phone when she needs a new phone. I would rather pay for another semester in college than buy her the latest iPhone every year.

Depends on the teen. My kids go to school in a wealthy district and they each have iPhones - but they're hand-me-downs from their parents and they're happy with them. My husband and I don't even have the latest and greatest because phones are pretty much at the bottom of our list of things we care about. We could certainly afford to if that was a priority for us, but it's not. We also drive 8-10 yr. old cars, as do most of our neighbors and friends. I think it's a myth that all wealthy people crave and buy status symbols. That's just silly.

My kids go to a Bethesda middle school and they don't even have phones yet (ages 12 and 11). I doubt they know which model iphone is which, but they do know an iphone from other phones.

What's wealthier?
My children go to schools with some really wealthy kids, and they know who has what phone, and who gets a new phone and who gets a handmedown phone. But my kids don't seem to feel any pressure to have the latest and greatest. There's no way I'm getting them new phones every year or two.

Yes while driving carpool I've heard 10 year olds get made fun of for only having an iPhone 5.

I saw that, but that's a slightly different question. The women made it seem like kids at [wealthy schools] are cognizant of who has the BRAND NEW iPhone, not a iPhone.

Maybe, but since *I* don't feel pressure to provide my kids with the latest and greatest, I really wouldn't care.

If it's a wealthy school then what's the big deal, buy iPhone X if you like iPhones.

Not going to say the district, but a woman at work today said something to the effect of "tons of competition at [$ high school] to keep up with the Joneses. As in, kids feel left out if they don't have the iPhone 8 or X. I'm dead serious."
