It really isn't that low....on par for peer institutions like Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, etc.

Gtown is like usc and vandy

We had the same reaction touring the campus. It felt like they've built an unremarkable building on every available piece of land leaving no greenspace. Campus felt cramped...almost like a soulless little city.

Georgetown built a new science building in 2012 (Regents Hall). It's beautiful, modern, and spacious, and they spent nearly 100 million dollars on it. Plus the easy access to the NIH and other STEM-based public organizations is something most LACs can't offer.

DH hated Georgetown undergrad. This was in the late 90s.

Weak at STEM? Do you refer to graduate school or undergrad? GTown’s programs is no better or worse than those at elite liberal arts colleges that are highly regarded here. Majoring in science at undergrad at GTown will get you into places e.g. top medical schools and graduate schools.

The Ivies not only provide a space to intermingle with the elite- they give tons of opportunities and funding which Georgetown struggles to give due to its low endowment. And I'm confident the teaching/individual attention is much better at the LAC. The elite ones are the top feeders to STEM PhD programs, and their students win competitive science fellowships (Apker, Goldwater, Churchill, NSF Grad Fellowships) at relative and absolute rates even better than some of the Ivies. Georgetown isn't much of a feeder at all. The science facilities are seriously outdated and the undergraduate demand for a strong STEM program pales in comparison to virtually any top school out there.

Georgeotwn is essentially a place full of preppy, white, rich kids who were not good enough to get into the ivies.

It is the #1 destination for non-exceptional kids of celebrities, royalty, business magnates etc. Quite preppy and cliquey, some even say quite snooty.

The school offerings in general are good but nothing exceptional.

Its reputation is for sure higher than its actual quality, mainly due to the interest by the VERY well-heeled crowd and the fact that it is the best school in DC.

Not nearly as many as GWU, but I know a few rich bimbos that attended GU. I assume they're def not need-blind? Full pay kids probably go to the top of the list.

Its reputation and selectivity for undergraduates is not merited in the sciences. Really weak departments, few real research opportunities, few professors have NIH or NSF funding. Not a place to go as a STEM undergrad

The infrastructure is tired because they don't have the budget for needed projects. Their endowment is way less than the top tier schools they like to view as their piers.

I feel the same way. Pretty overrated given all the hype it gets and what the rankings/acceptance rate would imply. I've been to many top schools and Georgetown was the most disappointing. I think the major appeal is being in DC, nothing else.

My impression is it is like stepping back in time. The culture is stale and infrastructure is tired. It seems to have no enthusiasm for learning....I get the feeling students are just checking off assignments and being who they feel they are supposed to be, not necessarily figuring out who they are.
