90% of the time my stylist does the shampoo himself. The 10% of the time someone else does it, I don't tip that personally specifically. I don't usually have small bills on me at that moment, and I expect my stylist to tip out from the 20% I give him. The price of the service is the same whether he does it all or not, so the tip is the same.

I see it exactly like table bussers in a restaurant. It is a support person to the person you are tipping, they are paid crappy, and their tip comes out of the 20% I give.

I'm surprised every is tipping. My understanding is that in some salons, at least, the stylist "tips back" to the shampooer, similar to how most restaurants work now. No one asks your salon what their protocol is?

$5, if around the holidays then $10.

NP here.

Just to be clear, do you tip if they charge you for the shampoo? One place I'm looking at charges $6 for a shampoo. A $5 tip is a much higher rate than I've ever tipped for anything before. The other place I'm looking at doesn't charge for the shampoo. Do I need to tip more there because otherwise I'm only paying about half as much?

I haven't had my hair professionally cut since I was about four and am completely clueless on the whole process. Is there anything else I should know?

Other salons though, I give them about $5.

I doubt it's actually 20 minutes. You sound dramatic.

If that's all they do (someone else colors/cuts/styles).

Is $5 enough?
