What other elementary(s) in Alexandria do you have experience with to make such a statement?

np but my kids went to MacArthur and I know Maury, Mason, Barrett and Tucker as well. I agree Lyles-Crouch is probably the best in terms of outcomes.

OP here. North Arlington is too expensive and South Arlington seemed like a stop on 395. We want walkability and metro (one car family). We prefer Del Ray or Old Town but great schools has abysmal infor on Jefferson Houston. My college roommate's sister has kids at Maury and suggest we attempt a transfer but she says they might have stopped that.

There are still transfers from Mount Vernon Community School in Del Ray. You're not guaranteed to be able to transfer to a school you're happy with, though. Many families are happy at MVCS. You may or may not be interested in Spanish immersion.

You're an idiot. McLean and N. Arlington are richer and whiter overall. That's it. Same demographic in ACPS elementaries does just as well, if not better, on SOLs.

Charles Barrett. Test scores are roughly the same as Lyles Crouch. Your commute to the Pentagon will be 10 minutes long.

There is part of Old Town that is zoned to Maury. You just need to be careful about the exact address. You can see the boundary maps on the acps website. My kids are there and we're happy there. It's a small school and has a very neighborhood feel.

Lyles Crouch has the best test scores.

There are many parents with kids currently in Jefferon-Houston who like it.
If you like Del Ray, there are portions of that neighborhood that go to Maury and portions that go to Mt. Vernon. Folks at the schools seem to like them. Due to lots of different demographics, test scores are going to be different compared to some other schools, but again, the people in those schools enjoy them, enjoy the teachers, and feel like their kids are well served.
Mt. Vernon is a dual-language school. Lots of people love the program, but if you would prefer to opt-out of dual language, there would be arrangements for you to be transferred to a nearby school. This would be determined by the exact location of your house, and also the space available at the school. Enrollment is booming, so sometimes a grade at the closest school is full, and you would have to be transferred to another one.

If you decide to explore outside of Del Ray Old Town, we live in Cameron Station on the West End of Alexandria. Lots of military families (easy commute to Pentagon) and Samuel Tucker is a great school.

They have stopped transfers. We are zoned for J-H and will have to move if it doesn't improve soon.

This area is an amazing place to live otherwise

PP again. To answer your question: Lyles-Crouch. We're zoned for Jefferson-Houston, which many would cite as the worst. Many elementary-aged kids near us go to St. Mary's.

Most people would say Lyles Crouch, but ACPS schools on the whole are not very good.

How do you define "best?"

My husband and I will be stationed at the Pentagon next September and we have a now kindergartner who will enter 1st grade. We will probably be in the DC area for 5 years and we've narrowed down our housing search to the eastern are of Alexandria. Is there a school we should be focusing on? With just one child we really yaren't picky about housing as most anything will do but we are worrying about schools. Thanks.
