In the spring he can take MYHA skill clinics.
Marianne Watkins does 3 day clinics in Rockville (usually, Xmas, Memorial Day, Labor Day).
Nothing But Net runs a holiday clinic and a spring clinic in Rockville.
I can also recommend EHS Reston skill clinic (they have a holiday, spring break, and spring clinics). EHS is the best in the are (in my opinion), but, you may not want to drive out to Reston.

Power hockey is great at Cabin John and there are always a few MYHA players, including very advanced ones, in the classes during each session.
The most advanced kids we have seen can skate really fast cross overs backwards and forwards but may want to refine their mohawk turns, get more speed on their 180 turns. Some of the younger kids are still working on getting speed on their crossovers. There can be a wide variety of levels but the classes are so small the instructors can really individualize the drills.

Agreed with all the PP. It's mostly just ice time at that age.
If you can afford a group class, power skating is preferred.

No investment pays off more than Skating stride/power lessons. Coaches love kids with powerful strides and speed. The rest esp below Bantams is extraneous. Even if it's a group skating lesson with figure skaters, do that over stick and puck handling lessons. Your 9 yo may not like it as much as "me" time with the puck, but he'll get way more ice time during contests.

I'd agree with the previous poster. More ice time almost always helps. Better instruction is, of course, better, but any time on the ice will help your kid improve.

I have two hockey kids and we have done some of those skills clinics and yes, I do think they help.
Frankly, the more ice time the better so make sure he also goes to any open "clinics" that are offered for his level of play - usually there is one option each week in addition to regular practice.

Son, 9, is in a program with MYHA. and I see him struggling with certain skills. So is asking for private lessons, but it is not in the budget, unfortunately. Has anyone taken Puck and Stick handling group classes and Power Skating group lessons at Cabin John? and if yes, did it help improve your kids' skills?
