My DH travels ALOT for work and used to keep all his foreign currency stashed in a drawer at home. Rather than changing currency at terrible rates before returning, he always just kept leftovers on the theory he would go back eventually. A few years ago, we were burglarized and lost the equivalent of about a $2000 total. Ugh. That and my engagement ring were about the only things of value they found. A couple of beat up old laptops and harddrives, maybe, but their main value was the old photo stash.
He now keeps his currency stash in a safe at the office.

DH and I probably have $100 bucks each in our wallets. We have an old large base we throw our change in and last time we cashed it in it was about $400 worth.

We used to keep $0 in the house for emergencies, but we are starting to increase our cash supply. We have about $1000 now in the safe (we bought a safe, for starters) and are slowly increasing that amount). Just in case something happens and we need cash and can't get it (ATMs arent working, credit cards aren't working, etc...). Better to be safe than sorry.

Dunno. Whatever we have in pockets/drawers? Probably around $100 at any given time--enough to cover "crap, I forgot to go to the ATM and the babysitter needs paid".

Normally we don't keep any. My parents, who were not well off, always kept at least $3000 in case of emergencies. I don't think it has anything to do with income. I'm starting to wonder if we should do the same for emergency preparedness.
