Yes. Sparked by an upcoming 20 yr HS reunion, I reconnected with a girl I had a crush on. We were both divorced and we talked for a few months by phone but didn't see each other as our feelings grew. Finally I visited her (she lived about 4 hrs away) and when that door opened, my heart sank. She had gained a LOT of weight (80-100 lbs?). We dated long-distance for a while and she told me (without my prompting) that she really wanted to lose weight. I bought her a local personal trainer as a gift. (I still feel guilty about that, but she was appreciative at the time.) She didn't make any progress before she abandoned the sessions. Eventually, the distance and mutual disinterest in relocating became considerations, but I just couldn't reconcile the fantasy girl from my youth with the big woman I was dating. I remember talking to a female relative at the time about my girlfriend's weight being a problem for me. They made me feel guilty about my superficiality (Shallow Hal) because she wasn't THAT overweight (the relative was overweight too). I challenged that argument by asking if they could understand my rationale if my girlfriend weighed 600lbs instead of 220. They agreed, at which point I stated that we're equally superficial, but just have different numbers in mind.

I see a bunch of well-meaning but ignorant people responding here. While I agree that some people are simply slobs, there are others who for medical reasons have difficulty losing weight. For example, someone with hypothyroidism ( a fairly common disorder today due to stress and chemical pollutants) can have a very difficult time losing weight. In fact, many people with this condition GAIN weight and have incredibly slow metabolism. An endocrinologist once told me that I would need to eat 1/3 of a normal daily intake in order to lose weight and that is on top of exercising 6 days a week for 45 minutes per session.

I've only heard about this in extremely morbidly obese individuals. I'm not talking a model plus size. More like Chrissy Metz - the under layers of fat rolls can grow a moldy/mildewish substance which doesn't get washed out when bathing. That's what smells.

My XH gained about 40 pounds during the few years we were married which I know really isn’t that much compared to a lot of people, but for me part of the issue (aside from many other incompatibilities) was that when we dated, he was pretty active, liked to walk the dogs, played in a sports league, went to the gym a few times a week. After we got married he completely threw in the towel, asking him to walk with me and the dogs around the block was a huge chore. This laziness permeated other aspects of his life—he became lazier at work, lazier at Home, everything. Huge turnoff.

Yes. She was 5'7' and got down to 110 lbs. And I headed out the door. The obsession with eating and exercise was too much.

Yes. He would give me these elaborate monologues about how just 3 years ago he was in perfect shape and he's going to get it back, he just needs 2 months and he'll lose all the weight. Then he'd ask for my help, but get mad at me when I did what he asked (mainly helping with food choices and encouraging him to go to the gym). It just wasn't worth it.
