Not only should you not add it to the bottle but you can skip rice cereal all together, Its like giving your baby white bread to eat.
When you are ready for solids start with whole grain baby oatmeal or veggies.

This is a very old practice that is no longer recommended. I wouldn't do it.

My 29w preemie was started on it in the NICU, as this method is usually tried first before putting them on reflux medications. I think we used 1t per ounce. Regarding choking, my DD was tiny so we did paced feeding with a Y-shaped nipple so it would flow faster. As she got older and her sucking was stronger, we changed to level three and then level two nipple flows.

Eventually it ended up making her somewhat constipated, so I tried oatmeal and then played around with different formulas (brands, powder, RTF, etc...) and decided she did best on Similac Advanced no rice cereal added. (BF wasn't an option, unfortunately.)

No, there are formulas that have rice starch in them already that are smoother. Its a choking hazard. It was too thick for my kid so we mixed the rice starch with sensitive (same brand, Similac).

My child only could tolerate the liquid/RTF.

Looks like the American Academy of Pediatrics thinks that adding rice cereal is a "reasonable management strategy." Medications should be trialed only after lifestyle modifications prove ineffective.

Reflux I can be an intolerance to cow's milk.
if you are formula feeding try other formula options.
If breast feeding remove dairy from your diet.

Find a new pediatrician asap!! Where are you located? I LOVE my ped and am very confident she is up on all of the latest and best recommendations- happy to share her name if that would be helpful.

My understanding is that this is incredibly outdated recommendation; I've never heard of it for reflux, but I'd do some reading on your own-- I'm highly skeptical that it would be considered best practice.

No and it's a very common suggestion.

Ped suggested rice cereal in bottle. BB is 8 weeks, 12 pounds. They want us to start this to help reflux. This seems crazy right?
