My walls are white on the bottom (with a white chair rail molding) and taupe above the chair rail. So, I do worry about putting a white or cream colored sideboard against the white wall.
Way too much wood.

I think the other colors in that pictured room all go well with that table color -- you could paint your sideboard rust, bright yellow (if that suits your style), or a warm cocoa. I'm sure there are other choices that would go well, too. Personally I have a small dining room and wish I had picked a sideboard that blended with my walls.

My suggestion is that whatever you buy or do, get two. They don't need to be the same thing - like a sideboard and a china cabinet OR a sideboard and a tea cart OR a sideboard and something else. That way you have the table/chairs that coordinate and then two of the other item so that it all looks coordinated much like the idea of repeating a pattern in 3 ways in a room.

OP here. I agree that contrasting would prob be best, but I don't know what color. My table is a medium walnut finish. It's light and warm.

Yes to painted finish. It will contrast. Matching and contrast are both fine. If you find a matching piece, great, you can add contrasting decor. If you find a colorful or white/ivory piece, you can find other ways to bring it together.

Two years ago we bought a beautiful dining table but couldn't afford the matching sideboard at the time. I went back recently to buy the sideboard in the same wood finish and they've discontinued it. I'm at a loss about how to look for something else. I'll never be able to match the wood, and if I try, it might look silly. What should I do?
