When I hire a housekeeping or landscaping company to mow my yard once per week, I cut a check and THEY have to declare the income on THEIR company taxes. I can't DEDUCT the cost of cleaning or landscaping on MY taxes unless I'm renting the home out as a business.

I'm confused by your statement.

Exactly. They are independent contractors, responsible for their own taxes. We are not required to pay SS on behalf of these people....they do it themselves (or are supposed to).

OP here. Yeah, you're right - the current ones abusing the system will be tougher, from both the illegal herself as well as the employer exploiting her. But at least let's turn off the spigot.

If you have an individual person, the threshold is $2000/year:

Any individual whom you employ to provide services in your home whom you pay directly AND whose total payments in the calendar year meets the IRS household employment threshold ($2000 currently) must receive a W-2 from the employer (family) and the household employer must pay the payroll taxes. According to the U.S. Department of Labor employee and independent contractor advise, “most workers [who are classified as independent contractors] are employees under the FLSA’s broad definitions.”

Opa here....Also, since libsters will complain about my initial (conservative-leaning) source, here's a link from CNN. (Ugh.) As far as legal immigrants, this plan calls for a point-based system (like Canada and Australia use) in determining whom to admit. Basically, it aims to ensure that those admitted will be net contributors to our country, and thus points are given for things like high educational attainment. The way things are laid out now, it will be tough to get in (special circumstances like assylum seekers are exempted), but again....a starting point for negotiations.

Now THIS is the main issue that got Trump the win - reasonable laws that put American citizens before illegal immigrants, or immigrants in general, when determining who is admitted to our country, other than those seeking assylum (which must be better proven). While the proposal in its entirety might seem far-reaching, it's an excellent starting point for negotiations with the D's who want to protect DACA.
