I listened to the promo for the show today and found it off-putting. For one thing, she referred to Went as "a major character in the story." Or, you know, a murderer in a horrific case. Or to be more accurate, a suspected murderer. He's not a character in a story.

I listen to a fair amount of true crime podcasts. I think there is a lot to learn from true crime and the best podcasts manage to tell a coherent, compelling story that not only bears witness to a horrible crime, but also illustrates larger points in society. I'm thinking of who killed Alberta Williams, about an area in Canada where many many indigenous women have been found murdered. Or even Serial season 1 which may have been a wrongful conviction, or Up and Vanished which may have brought enough attention to a cold case to actually solve the case. Or Accused, which focused on false confessions, and the lack of progress in a cold case once the initial suspect was (rightly) found not guilty of murder, despite his (false) confession.

I think most of the better true crime podcasts come from existing media outlets, like Alberta Williams, or Breakdown from the Atlantic Journal Constitution, Accused from a Cincinnati newspaper, etc.

In fact, I just started listening to Dirty John today and that was done by the LA Times, I think. The bottom line is writing is what really distinguishes a good podcast. And the writing on the promo was.....not good. It sounded like Sarah Fraser just prattling on about interesting characters. Not a compelling, serious look into an open investigation.

Breakdown from the Atlanta Journal Constitution is one of the few I can think of that did the podcast before (and during) the trail (for season 2). I think it is a very tricky, nuanced path to walk before the investigation is concluded and the trial is over. Based on the promo, I am skeptical of the podcast. But I will listen because i think this is an important case and needs more attention.

I don't know. It's not that I don't like her, I'm just not a huge fan. To be honest, the constant snarky DCUM gossip about everyone and anyone associated with the 99.5 morning show has made me not a fan of all of them. I don't even know that much about them. i sort of liked her fine on the Kane show. Then she leaves there to pursue her dream to move to NY and have a talk show. Next thing I know, she's back in DC, she's on Fox5, then she has the hey frase podcast and brings on sammy and they talk bad about Kane.....I don't know, there's just something sour grapes about it. It's not fair, because I know nothing about her, but I just have this feeling that she couldn't cut it in NY and so comes home to DC and takes her frustration out of people who helped her in the past. I've seen her a couple of times on Fox5 and she seems to have on too much makeup and a tad too try hard. Again, I have no idea at all, and it's not like I dislike her, it's just more accurate to say I'm not a huge fan. It's not like I think, oh, wow, Sarah Fraser is doing a podcast on this horrible murder, I bet she will do an awesome job and I have to check it out. It's more like, oh, there's a podcast about this horrible murder, hmm, it's done by Sarah Fraser, hmm, well I'll definitely check it out because I am very interested in the case and I really hope she does a good job.
