The first book that came to my mind was "The Chocolate Touch" but I don't recall the Veni/creepy parts of it.

I believe I read it around 1985 or 1986, when I was around 5th or 6th grade, so it was written in the mid 80s or earlier. Other books I enjoyed around the time were "The Egypt game" by Zilpha Keatley Snyder and "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin--just to give you an idea of the "type" of book it might be.

It was about a boy, who lived with his Dad. The book described him as loving chocolate, and loved to read, and said that the pages of his books often had chocolate smudges on them. One night, in the middle of the night, he hears the mail slot in his front door open, and he finds a postcard (or maybe a letter) with the word "Veni" (Latin) written on it. It's supposed to be creepy/eerie/scary.

Anyone know what this book is?
