We had this kind of ceiling in an historic home in TX. It was stained (or weathered) to a dark espresso color, almost black. One room had oak floors (the brown kind, not the orange kind) and the other room had terracttoa tiles. Both were gorgeous. The darkness of the ceiling made the room feel more expansive and not distracting like the picture.

Based off this picture, I woukd paint the ceiling white, stain the beams a darker color, and go with a dark (not golden) oak floor finish.

If you keep the ceiling tye natural wood color, I would go with some sort of natural tile floor like slate.

This. Those ceilings are dated. The lighter the color of the floor, the less it shows dust. I suggest you look at laminent.

Please don't paint the ceiling. If you buy a MCM house usually it is because you like the feel of that style, so please don't take away the essence of the house. I have the original floors in my MCM and they are the 3.5 inch planks in a light tone that balances out the darker ceiling.
