Check out the Gothamist, Time Out New York and New York Magazine online the week you’re going to be here.....they will have a listing of special events happening that weekend. There are almost always street fairs, parades and festivals going on somewhere in the city. Top of the Rock or 1 WTC is always fun or take the ferry out to Statue of Liberty and/or Ellis island. Head out to Coney Island if your adventurous.

What to do with kids, 8 and 6? We have done some tourist type things and zoo/museum. Is there anything seasonal or local we could try? For instance, I have never had "a slice" and my son loves lox. We'll be staying near Times Square.
