+1. Our DD is at a SLAC and she noticed the friendliness on her college tours and has found this to be true as a student. She purposely chose a SLAC because of the environment. She also appreciates the access to professors and that the professors take time to get to know the students.

Where did you go?

Definitely a bit of both. SLACs are on the whole happy, nurturing, supportive places where people care for each other and don't let their egos/ambitions get in the way of having meaningful relationships. The Midwest and the South are culturally very friendly and welcoming as well. There are definitely some exceptions, though.

If she doesn't like LACs, some universities to check out are William and Mary, Rice, Vanderbilt, WashU, Yale, Brown, Clemson, Villanova

SLACs are friendly places. The kids who go to these schools value relationships -- they chose a place where they could get to know most of their classmates. Also, at SLACs the walls between types of students tend to be porous membranes rather than concrete barriers -- jocks are friends with drama types who are friends with the newspaper staff, etc. You don't just hang with your posse.

Don't be fooled by the smiles. People on the coasts are just as friendly. They just show it in different ways.

And midwesterners would say, yes, we are friendly and it is very easy to fit in.

Everybody is much nicer once you get out of the city.

We recently did a tour of Ohio LACs and even though my DD didn't like them all, we were blown away by how friendly everyone was. Strangers smiled and said hello to us multiple times. Is this the norm in the midwest or just small rural LACs? Which other schools just have really nice student body?
