At the end of the day it is really how you and your potential fiancé feel about it. However, since you are polling DCUM, if it were me, I would want to be able to use the heirloom diamond, yet have it different enough that it doesn't remind me of my ex and was really shaped by my potential fiancé. It just feels weird to me to give the guy the ring to propose to me ...and that point I might as well propose to him. I wouldn't want to risk any new setting being like the old yet would want to be surprised with the final ring. I really like the PP suggestion of using colored stone of some value. I don't see that everyday and it would be different. Also you would have something old, something new, and something blue if sapphires were the accent stone.

Also, it makes sense to re-use a diamond, since it's a family stone. Perhaps set it with a sapphire or other colored stone of value? Your fiance can pay for the new setting. Win-win.

It's still meaningful to you. Plus, this may sound a bit silly, but coming from someone who's a bit superstitious -- if this marriage goes well then I feel like it can be passed down again, whereas I think people would be less likely to want an heirloom ring/stone that was last used in a marriage that ended in divorce. This new marriage will cleanse the taint of the last one from the ring.

I don't see anything wrong with resetting an heirloom stone for your engagement ring. It's not like the diamond belonged to your ex's grandmother.

I'd get a new setting and see if the jeweler can change it up a bit, just so it feels brand new to you. Congratulations!
