+1. DC is a small city. It's not that far to get to a maternity hospital. Most people live 15-20 minutes from one.

This is nowhere close to true. It takes a long time to get across DC from east to west.

Is there some invisible forcefield that keeps people east of the Annacostia from crossing it? Is it like the Berlin Wall? Are there border guards in snappy grey uniforms checking papers? How come I've never seen it?

I work in SE DC and live in the boonies in southern Maryland. The closest hospital to me is almost 45 minutes away. You could hop in a car, on a bus, or metro train from any point east of the river and be at a hospital before me or 95% of the rest of the population outside any major cities could.

Clearly you think there should be a hospital within a five minute walk of everyone. That's absurd.

Yes, but do the other hospitals in town have sufficient infrastructure to handle health care sevices for the thousands of people that live in tbe eastern side?

I think the sweetheart deal nayor nade with Veritas is shameful and I'm mystifed why there isn't more outrage.

Right now there are no maternity wards EOTR. It's shameful that Bowser is doing nothing to deal with this.

Some highlights:

- Only 25% of DC residents east of the river see their primary care physician in their own neighborhoods.

- To keep UMC afloat until then, the mayor hired the consulting firm Veritas. A Washington Post analysis discovered that the founders of the firm, hired at $300,000 a month by the city, were contributors to the mayor’s political campaign and that consultant fees have been rising under the no-bid contract to stanch financial losses at the medical center.

- The city has said that it handles more than 200 [911] calls a day from city residents who need medical care but are not experiencing life-threatening crises.
