This. Companies pay to use special search features on LinkedIn. If you have the right keywords/buzz words they are seeking they will find you.

I've asked for references before -- just "hey can you point me to someone that you've placed recently, so I can reach out and ask them questions?" Then I had a pretty quick back and forth with the recently-placed person to gauge whether it was a good fit.

Just so you know "headhunters" are paid by cos. to find specific people.

Recruiters on the other hand generally can help individuals and present individual candidate resumes to cos.

Unless you are about a Director or above, you would be dealing with a recruiter. Higher level folks deal w/ retained executive search professionals (or "headhunters"). And, yes, I am one.
