Wrong. According to the article and links the CB particularly emphasized that the legal help is for people here illegally, and to pursue options to legalize their status,
or make plans when faced with deportation proceedings.
I'd actually be in favor of this. Illegal immigrants often have relatives who are here legally or are citizens, including children. Deportation can cause real disruption, and spending some money to endure that children are properly provided for--getting guardianship papers in order, etc. I'd also be in favor of using money to ensure that people's rights aren't violated--there are cases of ICE deporting citizens or LPRs.
I'm actually in favor of sanctuary cities, because I think that local police should not be doing the federal government's job for them, and communities are safer if victims and witnesses are willing to come forward and cooperate with law enforcement. But I'm somewhat skeptical of using money to actively prevent deportation, absent some special circumstances.
